Improvisation
Organized play, e.g. games and sports, the arts
Outcome-focused and compulsory work
Drudgery, enslavement, deadening ‘work’
Deadly Theatre and other deadly art forms are likely to be outcome-focused but may not have a compulsive element. A video gamer in full flow might be in a heightened state of tension and agitation, so the image of deadening seems hardly an accurate description. And yet in both there is this ‘vicious cycle’ that seems unbreakable and unresolvable. There is another form of play that seems to embody many of the qualities of deadly play – having an addictive, obsessive, compulsive energy, this form of play seems to ‘play the player’.
